Sega

The hackers made off with the personal information of Sega’s 1.3 million users. This includes email addresses, home addresses, dates of birth and their encrypted passwords.

Citigroup

2009

Heartland Payment Systems

The record holder for the largest-ever breach is believed to be a 2008 attack on Heartland Payment Systems (HPY), in which an estimated 130 million customer accounts were compromised.

Virginia Health Professions

Hackers broke into a Virginia state Web site used by pharmacist. They deleted records on more than 8 million patients and replaced the site's homepage with a ransom note demanding $10 million for the return of the records.

Hannaford Bros. Chain

The breach saw 4.2 million credit card numbers taken, and more than 1,800 of those numbers have been reported as having been used.

2008

Bank of NY Mellon

The bank says that another 8 million customers were affected by the breach, bringing the total figure to 12.5 million, which may make it the largest data breach of the year.

 

2007

TJ Maxx-TJX

A hacker or hackers stole data from at least 45.7 million credit and debit cards of shoppers at off-price retailers including T.J. Maxx and Marshalls in a case believed to be the largest such breach of consumer information.

FIS initially said about 2.3 million records may have been compromised, but in filings with the SEC about two weeks later, the company increased that number to as many as 8.5 million.

TD Ameritrade

Online trading company TD Ameritrade alerted more than 6 million customers Friday that a security breach occurred with its client information database.
